August is for arachnids

Farm News

Their webs appear on cue, as if the spiders have a wall calendar built into their tiny brains (do they even have "brains??"). Morning walks along the creek are an exercise of arms out in front to break the webs that crisscross the path. So many kinds of spiders, so many strategies for ensnaring their prey. The ground web spiders build "funnel webs;" unsuspecting ground-crawling critters walk across the web while the spider lurks at the bottom of the funnel. These funnel webs dot the pastures and hay fields, often shimmering with dew drops in the low morning light.

I rarely see the actual spiders who build and rebuild their webs at human chest height, unless I get my morning walk in extra early. They must retreat to safe hiding at dawn's light. Their single-strand webs seem designed to catch flying insects; I'm hoping that mosquitos are a common meal, but I have found fly remnants in a few strands. They must be a nuisance to deer, coyotes and racoons who frequent the walking paths at night. Then, there are the small-but-mighty spiders who cohabit our farm dwellings. Today, I spied a puny gal strung along our farmhouse window, in the process of rolling up a giant paper wasp.

My favorite spider of August is the orb weaver spider. She is both stunning and cunning. She builds an elaborate and decorated web in the quiet places of the garden, her bright yellow and black diamond patterned body in harmony with the garden flowers. Her appetite is voracious; it is a joy to watch her roll up a fly within seconds of the victim hitting web. Unfortunately, she doesn't discriminate between beneficial and pest insects. I have watched her dismantle a monarch butterfly with as much efficiency as a house fly. The benefits of spiders on a farm far outweigh the annoyances. I save them and honor them whenever I can.

The farm got a brand new compost windrow turner and is making some gorgeous compost from the goat manure. The western garden bed is a wall of pumpkin vines. The sunflowers are having their moment in the sun--a kaleidoscope of color. The lawn adjacent to the pavilion is set up for guests to hang out and play games. There's a nice breeze under the shade of the pavilion OR you can enjoy the farm's fare in our air-conditioned dining room/café "Caprae." Our small bites and bar snacks menus are simply delicious, and folks are beginning to discover the amazing food that our chefs are crafting. Sunday brunch specials change weekly-the word on the "street" is that we have the best brunch in town! Read about all the happenings below and come visit us!
