Farm News
It is risky to plant a cover crop in late July. You spin the roulette weather wheel in the hopes that your field receives rain shortly after seeding. The warm-season cover crop gods shown favorably upon our farm and dumped several inches of rain onto the newly seeded field of sorghum-Sudan grass mixed with buckwheat. The warm soil, coupled with ample moisture, resulted in an amazing germination rate. After the rains, the previously browned and dessicated field became a five-o'clock shadow of green tinged with red from the buckwheat stems. With close to three weeks of growth under their belts, the cover crop is emerging strong and lush. The farm's plan to harvest a forage crop before a frost makes the vegetation toxic (sorghum-Sudan Grass produces cyanide when hit with a frost) appears to be on target.
The landscape surrounding the farm is cast in yellow hues and fading light. The goldenrod flowers have opened, and bumblebees scavenge their pollen like old ladies at an all-you-can-eat-buffet. The black-eyed susans dominate the remnant prairie with the lovely pink Obedient plant as accent. The sun sets earlier each evening, but the smoke from distant wildfires puts on a brilliant light show.
The creek path at dusk has taken on an eerie silence. The noisy and melodic summer birds have wrapped up their breeding season and begun their fall migration early. The permanent residents, woodpeckers, nuthatches, cardinals and bluejays, sense that the woods and fields belong to them again. Like the inhabitants of beach towns, they tolerate the seasonal folk, knowing that their stay is temporary. I miss the flute serenades from the wood thrushes, but the great-horned owls greet meet me every evening, sitting atop fence posts, awaiting their nightly rodent meal from the pasture.
The farm garden continues to produce. The rows of radishes, kohlrabi and cabbage are standing strong. The western garden bed is a wall of pumpkin vines. A pumpkin patch is emerging. The sunflowers are having their moment in the sun--a kaleidoscope of color.
The lawn adjacent to the pavilion is set up for guests to hang out and play games. There's a nice breeze under the shade of the pavilion OR you can enjoy the farm's fare in our air-conditioned dining room/café "Caprae." Our small bites and bar snacks menus are simply delicious, and folks are beginning to discover the amazing food that our chefs are crafting. Sunday brunch specials change weekly-the word on the "street" is that we have the best brunch in town! Read about all the happenings below and come visit us!
